The American Revolution was an anomaly in the history of the world. For a feeble colony just struggling into existence, without ships, without a regular army and without munitions of war, to enter into open combat with the most powerful nation on the globe for the sake of a mere principle, was opening a new page to the eye of monarchs, which it is no wonder they trembled to read.

The great and glorious event was identified most distinctly with the character and influence of one man. There were many wise, enlightened, patriotic, and powerful spirits, scattered over every part of the country, and laboring most efficiently and nobly in the cause; but whoever traces the course of things, from the commencement of the War of Independence, to the final establishment of the nation under the Federal Constitution, will not hesitate to say that at no point could the American Revolution have dispensed with the services, or succeeded without the aid and influence of George Washington.

As we consider and ponder the Christian qualities of character of the men and women who won for us our civil freedom, we can see how disappointed and grieved they would be if they could see how in just over two hundred years, American Christians have allowed the world's first Christian republic to drift into socialism. But infinitely more serious is how we have grieved the Holy Spirit by our forgetfulness and disinterestedness in the unique government He brought about in America for His glory.

As American Christians, we are not presented with a very encouraging sight when we look at the world's attitude toward us and the attitude of many people in our own nation.

But there is reason for hope! Now is the time to walk by faith and not by sight (II Cor. 5:7), faith to look back to what the Lord has done “in ancient days, in the generations of Old.” (Is. 51:9). Even if America is surrounded by enemies, within and without, we will know they are not just against America, but America's God. America from the days of its creation has been for God's glory and for His people, and if His people will be willing to learn what He has done for them in days past, repent and ask God's forgiveness for forgetting what He had done in bringing America into being, God will deal with enemies within and without.
